The city of Hallandale Beach was named after Luther Halland, a worker for Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad, which was built in the early 1900's.

Hallandale was incorporated on 14 May 1927. By that time the Community was comprised of 1,500 residents. Hallandale was reincorporated as a city in 1947, at which time it expanded its borders through annexation of nearby unincorporated land from Broward County. In August 1999, the city officially changed its name to Hallandale Beach.

Hallandale Beach is best known as the home of Mardi Gras Casino greyhound racing track, which was opened December 1, 1934 as the Hollywood Kennel Club. In 2006, an extensive renovation project added approximately 1,100 slot machines and a poker room. Two years later, an additional 200 slot machines were added and in 2009, the Big Easy Poker Room was relocated and expanded.

Hallandale Beach also has a sizable financial district, with offices for a number of banks and brokerage houses. The area is sometimes referred to as the "southernmost Canadian city," as it is a popular vacation destination for many tourists from Quebec and the Northeastern United States. A significant number of these tourists eventually retire to the area.
