General information and History on Broward County Florida

Broward County is located south of Palm Beach County, and North of Miami Dade County. According to the US census for 2007, the population of Broward was 1,759,591. This makes Broward the second most populated county in the state of Florida. It is also the sixteenth most populated county in the United States.

Broward County is one of three counties that make up the South Florida metropolitan area, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade, collectively called the South Florida Area. Even thought Broward County has numerous cities, the three major cities are Pompano Beach (North), Fort Lauderdale (Center), and Hollywood (South).

Broward County was first created in 1915. It was named for Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. In 1915, Palm Beach County and Dade County contributed nearly equal portions of land to create Broward County. By the 1960s, Broward County was considered a leader in agriculture products and services within the State of Florida. The massive buildup of the South Florida region since the mid 1970s transformed the region.
