The city of South West Ranches is located in the western developmental boundaries of Broward County Florida, about 10 miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale and about 20 miles from downtown Miami: bordered by Weston to the north; Davie and Cooper City to the East; Pembroke Pines to the South; and the Florida Everglades to the West. SouthWest Ranches was incorporated in 2000, having been the 30th city in Broward County to incorporate. This was done to prevent annexation with Pembroke Pines or the town of Davie and preserve their semi-rural lifestyle. Because the area has many horse ranches and is located in the southwestern part of Broward County, residents chose “Southwest Ranches” over many other potential town names. To support its rural-equestrian lifestyle the Town has designated and developed dozens of miles of greenways multi-use trails.
The town includes Country Estates, Green Meadow, Ivanhoe Estates, Rolling Oaks, and Sunshine Ranches. Recently included to the communities were Landmark Ranch Estates and Sterling Ranch Estates.
The zoning in the town of SouthWest Ranches is almost entirely rural residential and agricultural, which requires that lots must be a minimum of a full one to two acres. There is also have a growing amount of zoning for recreation and open space, which preserves land for residents’ enjoyment. The newest zoning district is for community facilities that allows uses that serve the community such as places of worship.
SouthWest Ranches Real Estate is primarily residential, with most lots of 1 or more, with some small farms and equestrian ranches. The town has laws that keep homes from being built on lots of less than 1-acre. They also generally stop streetlights and sidewalks from being built, in order to conserve and keep the town rural.

- Frontier Trails.
To date only Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park has been developed.
