The original name of the town was Zona, as it was founded by a group of settlers composed of workers from the Panama Canal Zone. Randolph P. Davie, a developer, bought about 27,000 acres in the area and the town name was changed to “Davie.” The town was carved out of Everglades land that was mostly under water. The early history of the town was dominated by drainage issues, some of which still persist today.
Davie has always had a reputation as a “Western” town. It boasts a significant horse-owning population and once was home to many herds of cattle. In recent years, commercial and residential development has discouraged such practices but Davie still tries to maintain a “Western” feel. Much of the Real Estate on the western side of the town are acre lots, where many home owners have horses.
